I take a desktop that came with Windows 8 installed to the hard drive when I bought information technology. I'm considering building a new PC because the CPU mine came with isn't quite enough for loftier end gaming (Intel i3-2130)

If I use the difficult drive I have in my current PC for my adjacent PC build, volition I notwithstanding have windows or will I have to buy a windows license for the new PC?

Will I have windows for as long as I have that difficult drive and don't erase information technology or is that not how it works?

Also, I DO NOT Want TO PIRATE WINDOWS, OR USE Whatsoever OTHER OS, so Delight don't carp suggesting either of those solutions.

The problem with my current PC is that it's a gateway desktop that I put a 500w PSU and AMD 7850 graphics carte in so putting a improve CPU on that crappy gateway mobo doesn't seem similar a good idea, and if I'm gonna put in a new mobo, I'm think gonna need a new case. At that bespeak I might equally well build a new PC right? but if I have to practice all that and spend $100 it will probably end up being way too expensive for me to justify doing it at the moment.

But if there'southward any way around spending another $100 on windows other than pirating it or using some other OS information technology would be a lot more than viable for me to upgrade soon.

None of united states would suggest piracy anyway, its against the ToS of the forums.

Yes, the windows will still work, you will just take to phone call Microsoft (on the number shown in activation) and tell them you changed motherboard. They volition give you the necessary data to activate windows again on the new PC.

It is unremarkably suggested to re-install windows when you go a new motherboard, but you lot could apply Windows refresh to set the system dorsum to default. That would remove all of your programs though

The windows volition exist there as long as y'all don't wipe the bulldoze.

From a pure legal perspective, y'all'll need to purchase an OEM copy of Windows for your new build.

From what i understand, he plans to go on all of the current parts, and replace the motherboard and CPU. If he wasn't getting the new case, it would exist simply the same as if he was replacing the board.

Tons of people accept done it.

Tons of people take washed it.

That's correct. All I really need to replace is the motherboard and CPU to start. I could take the RAM, hard drives, PSU, GPU, and optical drive from my current desktop to use for my new one then as far equally Microsoft is concerned, it'south just a mobo and CPU upgrade.

All the other upgrades are easy so right now I'm simply concerned about upgrading the CPU and mobo

Cheers for the assist

1 license, 1 PC.
Changing the motherboard/CPU, you may/probably need to reinstall the OS.

Just putting the erstwhile drive, with the former OS install, in with the new parts often does not work.
Be prepared for a total reinstall.

Windows 8 OEM Preinstall (Acer, Gateway, Dell, HP, etc.) is tied to the motherboard by a central embedded in the motherboard firmware and cannot be used elsewhere. Y'all're going to take to purchase a re-create of Windows.
